Cities Are Transforming: International Conference in Istanbul Seeks Solutions to Global Socio-Ecological Crises
Interconnected socio-ecological crises—such as the climate crisis, loss of biodiversity, and ecosystem degradation—are deepening day by day due to humanity’s impact on the planet. Scientists are calling for urgent and collective action to protect the world’s life-support systems and remain within the planet’s safe boundaries. In this transformation, the role of cities and urban ecology is greater than ever.
It is precisely at this juncture that urban ecology is leading the way in sustainability transformations and playing a key role in safeguarding the health of the planet. Rapidly growing cities have become a decisive actor in shaping resource use, climate resilience, and biodiversity.
To bring these critical issues to the forefront, the 4th SURE World Conference, titled “Cities Under Global Social Transformations: Embracing Change for a Greener Future,” will be held in Istanbul from July 16–19, 2025, hosted by Yıldız Technical University.
The conference will explore how cities can enhance ecosystem services, reduce their environmental impacts, and transform into more resilient, sustainable communities. The event will bring together researchers, students, experts, representatives from the public and private sectors, decision-makers, and civil society actors, providing a platform for sharing innovative ideas aimed at transforming cities into fair, green, and livable spaces for both people and non-human nature.
Held in a hybrid format, the conference will offer an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary environment for knowledge sharing under the theme “in cities, for cities, and the ecology of cities.” Contributions are expected from participants representing various countries and disciplines.
